Considering the upcoming mayoral elections, the latest installment of The School Project which revisits the 2013 CPS closures is well-timed for giving background on the current debates in education.

The decision to close 49 neighborhood schools sparked community activism in neighborhoods affected by closures as well as city-wide protests against the Board of Education.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel received public criticism for this decision, particularly because the mayor has had the power to appoint the governing board and CEO of the Chicago Public Schools since a change in Illinois legislation in 1995.

On January 22nd, 2015, The School Project’s latest feature, “Chicago Public Schools: Closed”, takes a look into the life of a parent turned activist names Rousemary Vega and her experience through the protests and hearings which developed after the school closures.

Along with Vega, you will hear from major figures in public education such as Terry Mazany and Karen Lewis.

After the film, the University of Chicago Consortium on Chicago School Research will present their latest research which analyzes long-term effects of the school closings on the estimated 10,000 displaced students.

Following the research will be a break-out panel discussion moderated by journalist Laura Washington as well as a Q&A session with the audience.

The latest installment of The School Project will resonate with all parents regardless of their political position or involvement with the issues.

This event is the perfect opportunity for curious individuals to gain insight from those who were personally affected by the closures.
