An important part of Kindling Group’s internship program is supporting our interns in their pursuit of independent projects, both fiction and documentary. This year our No Small Matter post-production intern, Ji Jinglu, a senior at Columbia College, developed and shot her own short film blending animation and live action to tell the story of memories and discarded waste.

Hello! Elly Tier here. I am a senior at Columbia College Chicago currently serving as the talent coordinator for this year’s DocYourWorld event. I also happen to be a post production intern for Kindling Group and was excited to find out we’d be able to screen Radical Grace. I have been following this film for about a year now and have been a fan of it since I first knew of its making.

Happy Earth Day!

We thought that this would be a good opportunity to share a special project we’ve been working on over the last year: Smart Power Illinois, a digital campaign to educate consumers about the smart grid rollout in Illinois.

Over the last year, Kindling Group has focused on how to strategically grow the organization to bring our best selves to our current projects, while also developing the infrastructure to work on new passion projects and grow to our highest potential. A big piece of this, of course, is building our manpower with new staff and board members.

We’ve alluded to it in the newsletter. We’ve made sly mentions in tweets. And now… finally… we’re ready to tell the whole world about it.

Veterans Coming Home is an innovative public media project that Kindling Group is producing in collaboration with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, to explore the lives of post-9/11 veterans, the divide between them and their communities, and the stereotypes that veterans and civilians hold about each other. Why does this divide exist? How does it affect communities across the country? And why does it matter?

We recently ran into a great article on No Film School, “Meet the PMD, the Crew Position You Didn’t Know You Needed.” A PMD is Producer of Marketing and Distribution, your advocate for getting the film in front of people. The article circulated around the office in an email, and it seemed to ring true for all of us about something at the heart of the Kindling production model.

I just enjoyed my first True / False Film Festival, and if you a) live in the Midwest or b) are a filmmaker or c) like watching movies or d) have a pulse, make sure you don’t miss it next year.

Last week, KG Associate Director Meggie Cramer went to the Boulder International Film Festival, where our co-production, Radical Grace, was playing. While she was in town, she talked to 303 Magazine — and guess what? She made it to the top of their “Top Moments of the 2016 Boulder International Film Festival” list.

We are super excited to announce a new project that’s been in the works for the last few months: the No Small Matter video blog, hosted by a rockstar teacher featured in the film, Rachel Giannini.

No Small Matter is a feature film and national engagement campaign we’re working on with Siskel Jacobs Productions. It reveals how our country is raising its youngest citizens, why making the most of this time in their lives is so crucial, and most importantly, what we can do to change the perception of when learning begins.
